Big Boned

Big-Boned is a story about my lifetime with an eating disorder (who I call Ed), sure, but it’s a resource.

It’s a resource for those who have struggled with obesity, disordered eating or eating disorders at any point in their life.

It’s also a resource for those who have never struggled with those specific things but look to understand what that world may look like for those who do.

Did you know?

Eating disorders have the second-highest mortality rate of all mental health disorders

*These are stats from data that we DO have. Think about data we DON’T have. I wouldn’t be surprised if these numbers are heavily misrepresented due to stigma, lack of resources, etc.

  • Anorexia nervosa has the highest mortality rate of any psychiatric disorder, with 5-10% of individuals diagnosed dying within 10 years of onset

  • An estimated 70 million people globally struggle with an eating disorder but these numbers continue to rise

  • 95% of those affected begin between the ages of 12 - 25

  • Eating disorders affect all genders but are underreported in men. Estimates show 1 in 3 individuals with eating disorders are male, but far less likely to seek treatment due to stigma and lack of resources

  • 50-75% of people with an eating disorder are likely to present with co-occurring disorders (anxiety, depression, substance abuse, etc.)
